Holiday Food Festival/Portland Saturday Market

We decided to hop on the Max train today and head to downtown Portland OR. Our first stop was the Holiday Food and Gift Festival at the Oregon Convention Center. It was filled with holiday treats and unusual gifts and Christmas decorations. The place was packed and we didn't find a single gift there this year, but it was fun to look around and taste the many, dips, candies and wine from the local area. Next stop downtown Portland. We had lunch at a Japanese Restaurant in Pioneer Place then hopped back on the Max Train and headed to the Portland Saturday Market located under the Burnside Bridge next to the Willamette River.
This market started out as a place for local artisans to show their wares and has continued for at least 30 years. I still have a pair of earrings that I bought from an artist when I moved here in 1979! As you can see below, it is still a place to find something unusual and get a chance to speak to the individual who actually made it.
There are some folks that set up shop in a pretty informal way. This artist was very serious about selling this painting today. Not sure what this symbolizes, but it certainly isn't a light commentary on life.
Here I am checking out some leashes below. Nothing that can withstand Sailor's excited chewing when he gets his leash put on and he realizes he is going for a walk. Some pretty neat fabric and styles, I have to admit I was tempted and the price was cheap.
The artist below literally had his shop on his bicycle. Very ingenious, though it might be dangerous dealing with the trains and traffic around the market.
There are many food booths and picnic tables that are protected from the elements to sit and eat and enjoy the people watching which is at its finest here. I always feel like I am revisiting the late 60's - peace, love and flowers. Below are a couple of the street musicians at opposite ends of the music spectrum. Just little snippets of their performance to enjoy so you can share what we did today. As Joni Mitchell said.."they were playing real good for free"
