Hanford Reactor Tour

In April we Drove to the Ricland Washington Area for an amazing tour of the Hanford Atomic Reactor.  The Reactor is now controlled by the Department of Energy and the National Park Service.  The tours last about 4 hours and are free but you need an advance reservation.

This is the outside of Reactor Number 2.  Inside this reactor was made the Plutonium that went into the first atomic bomb ever tested in New Mexico.  It also provided the Plutonium for the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki Japan.

Parked beside the Reactor is the train that delivered to Fuel rods to the facility.

The two pictures above are the front of the reactor where the fuel rods are.  Each rod has it's own water cooling system.  The reactor was built close to the Columbia River to provide the needed water.

Marlene and I in the Control Room.  I tried to get it started, but they seemed to be perturbed at that idea.

Blues Cruise Number 2

It's been a busy spring and early summer so far for 2016.  Also we lost my mother and our last Irish Wolfhound, Cina in February, right after we went on our 2nd "Blues Cruise" to Cozumel Mexico   Because of all of these changes, somehow we neglected to get a post put on this Blog for the Blues Cruise.   It was another great cruise, full of great music and fun, so we wanted to rectify the lack of posting now, by going back for a quick review of the trip.

It started out like our first Blues Cruise, from Miami.  And like the first trip we spent a couple of fun days in South Beach before the Cruise Began

The Weather was perfect for walking along the boardwalk  to watch the wind surfers glide through the turquoise waters.  We love the colorful lifeguard stations in Miami.

We also walked many miles exploring the cool Art Deco districts of South Beach.

Even our hotel was Art Deco, and right on Ocean Drive....a noisy but fun street right across the street from the beach.   Marlene is sitting in the Cheshire Cat's Chair I think, inside our hotel.

Marlene standing in front of a monument, that we can't recall what it was memorializing, however this was in a park where there was an art museum and a life jazz performance going on which we enjoyed for a while before continuing our explorations.

After a long day of walking all over south Beach we topped the day off with these huge drinks, and then rolled into bed.

On our first day of the cruise  as we left Miami with the wind blowing through our hair, we enjoyed   the first of many performances outside  on the Lido deck

One of many of the great artists we enjoyed was Eric Gale, and his unusual left handed guitar playing.

The great thing about these cruises was the opportunity to see new artists.  We discovered many on this cruise that we continue to follow.

And of course the highlight of these cruises is always Joe Bonamassa, who we saw in more than one performance.  During this particular performance, pictured above, we had unusual viewing position on the rail right above  and behind the stage.

This familiar face is that of Anton Fig, the long time drummer for Paul Shaffer's Band on the David Letterman show.  He was Joe's drummer on this cruise.

Another highlight of the performances this year  was Beth Hart.  She had individual performances as well as a performance with Joe Bonamassa

Our one stop on this cruise was Cozumel.  Here's Marlene on the dock as we wait for our excursion to begin.  Our ship is in the background, the Norwegian Pearl.

At our first stop on the Cozumel excursion was at a Mexican cultural center where we watched a performance of these young men doing a traditional Mayan pole spinning display.

We then went to a small village where we saw this ancient Mayan temple and Marlene posed with a native (for a small price)

An impromptu Mexican flag, near the beach

All in all a great cruise, and now we start planning for Blues Cruise #3

Walking

Ever since Marlene retired in August, we have been walking like crazy.  We try hard to get in at least 10000 steps a day, and often more.  We walk in our neighborhood, to Camas, and to Washougal, and usually to the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society a couple times a week, which is about a 6 mile round trip.  We also go into Portland, or some other area further away, for a change of scenery occasionally.  During the spring and summer when the flowers our out Marlene always likes to pause to appreciate pretty ones we see.

During a walk through NW Portland we found this sculpture near Providence Park

And of course wherever we go....Flowers, Flowers, Flowers

Cina

We lost our beautiful girl, Cina today.  We had four wonderful years with her.  We wish it had been more, but we treasure everyone we had.

We got her in Idaho, and this was picture was taken in a rest stop on the way home.

She had a great friend and partner in Sailor, and was never far from his side

Cina was a rambunctious puppy, and was never far from mischievous

She had  a great life, with lots of adventures and travel

She and Sailor loved every minute of their life, and found joy in just being alive.

She loved all her humans even when they gave her baths or made her dress up in silly costumes

She will never be forgotten by us

Marlene's Retirement - August 14, 2015

After years of obsessing about retirement, it finally arrived on August 14, 2015.  My team threw me a retirement reception at the building and it was a fun wonderful send off for me. Martin came to enjoy the festivities and meet some of the folks that I have talked about for years.
Below are just some of the folks who came to wish me well on my new  adventure into retirement.
Mary Kunkel and I together in the picture below. I could not have done my job for so many years without Mary!  She is the Crisis team's business analyst extraordinaire who made it all work.
Pictured below is my boss Vanessa Gaston and three of the women I have worked with for at least 15 years in various roles in the mental health community.
I was then surprised by a dinner with my closest friends Gerene McDowell, Bud and Marge Hatfield, Dee Dyck, Martin and I along with Mary Kunkel. I don't know how in the world they were able to pull off this surprise but it was amazing and definitely the cherry on top for me.
Below I am with Bud and Marge Hatfield who became my fast friends and family when I began working at Lewis County Mental Health in 1980. I love the beautiful flowers they all gave me!
Dee Dyck and I, she retired before I did from the Crisis team and talked me through my last tough months on the job. Thank you does not seem to be enough!
It was a great send off, which I know I will look back on with happiness.
