Sick

Like a lot of people we know and work with Marlene and I have been battling seasonal sickness over the last few weeks. Mine was mainly just your average cold. Marlene’s started out as your average cold, but refused to go away or get any better. On top of that she was also running a fever for a few days. Finally she went into the doctor and found out she had pneumonia…so she ended up missing all of last week from work. She started back yesterday, and is feeling better each day.

Other than working ourselves to the bone in our jobs we don’t have a lot of new things to report. I found out that I will be taking another business trip in early May for a few days. This time to Chicago for 3 days at the Hilton Hotel on Michigan Avenue. We decided this time that Marlene is going to go with me. Chicago is practically her home town, so she’s anxious to show me around…and we might be able to get down to her real home town of Rockford for a day or so as well. We’ve got our dog sitters arranged…this time we are using someone new for part of the time..a young woman who works at our Vet, so she’s familiar with our dogs, and can handle them. We’re looking forward to the trip.

We took a day trip to Spirit Mountain last Saturday…a nice little get away, although not particularly profitable. As most often happens, we had our ups and downs, and left on the down side. Had a nice buffet dinner however…we think the quality of their food has improved since the last time we were there. As far as other diversions go – we are both reading a little more in the evenings lately. I just finished a book by Bernard Cornwell, entitled The Last Kingdom, a historical novel set in the Dark Ages in England. It revolves around the battles of King Alfred the Great in defeating the Viking attempted takeover of England. It’s really amazing how close the Norsemen came to conquering all of England. Alfred the First is the only English Monarch to have the descriptor “The Great” officially attached to his name. He is the reason England is not populated today by Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. The book I am currently reading is titled ‘Thunderstruck” by Erik Larson ..about Marconi. Just getting into it, but I think it should be good.

As far as TV goes, our favorite show at the moment is the HBO Series “John Adams” based on the book by the same name. It’s an excellent production and very true to the book.
