Veteran's Day at the Portland Zoo

Martin and I spent the day at the zoo in Portland Oregon. They admitted all veterans and their families free today. Since Martin was in the Army during the Vietnam era, we were eligible for the free admission. It was a nice surprise and we didn't realize that this was going on until we arrived. We took the Max train from near the Portland Airport and avoided all the freeway hassles for this Veteran's day holiday. Above is one of the eagles in the Pacific Northwest exhibit which also included the mountain lion pictured below.
We watched a Polar bear chew on a log like it was a tooth pick and got some great pictures of the Asian elephants.
This is Lily the baby elephant that was born at the zoo this year.
Check out the beautiful face on the leopard below.
Above are two of the three lion cubs born at the zoo a month or so ago. They were so much fun to watch and a very popular exhibit today!
Check out the hippo above, he was huge...never seen one so close up and personal.
The giraffes were grazing in sync; and the rhino was basking in the sun.
I think this is one of the tigers below. We got some great videos that we will post on Facebook as well.
Great day! We had promised ourselves a trip to the Portland Zoo on a day when it wasn't for a concert or some other special occasion. It was really wonderful to have the opportunity to focus on the animals and enjoy the zoo as it is meant to be.
