Once again we volunteered for the Hood to Coast Relay Race for Martin's fellow Oregon Employment Department employees running team "It's All Downhill on Average". Here is a picture of the starting line which is at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, and below the first teams starting the race. There are about 12,600 runners and walkers participating in this relay race. The walkers start in Portland, but the runners go from the mountain to the beach at Seaside Oregon.
This year there were Olympic medalists Jim Ryun and Frank Shorter were on teams as well as Lopes Lamong who was Olympic flag bearer in 2008 and 2012 Olympian. All the teams are required to enlist 3 volunteers in order to participate in the race which is 198 miles long. If you don't have volunteers who work the course your team can be eliminated from the relay race. There were 3600 volunteers and 1050 teams and 3000 support vehicles. Below is my sister Maxine who agreed to help us out this year. She volunteered with us 9 years ago as well. This year we were at exchange #6 which was in Sandy Oregon.
Maxine is applauding those brave runners who have finished their leg and are handing the baton to their next team mate. Here I am below, making sure that the support vehicles know where to go to park and prepare for the next leg.
Here is Martin giving me a break. You can see we had our head lights ready for the night time runners. We actually got to see the last runner go through the exchange and close it down! One of these years we hope to actually see our team make the exchange. Maybe next year!
